The Potomac River Basin and its Estuary: Landscape Loadings and Water Quality Trends, 1895 – 2005

Dr. Norbert Jaworski participated in many of the early water quality monitoring programs on the tidal Potomac River, when data and results were recorded only in hard copy reports. After his retirement from U.S. EPA, Dr. Jaworski computerized those and other data of that time and combined them with recent data to produce a record stretching back to 1895. The treatise he wrote provides a broad, 110-year perspective of landscape loadings and resulting water quality trends in the Potomac River basin and its estuary through 2005.

The Potomac River Basin and its Estuary: Landscape Loadings and Water Quality Trends, 1895-2005, known as “The Treatise,” can be downloaded by chapter:

Total Maximum Daily Loads of Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) for Tidal Portions of the Potomac and Anacostia Rivers in the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia

A companion document to the Potomac PCB TMDL is a report by LimnoTech, Inc., describing the development, calibration and validation of a PCB water quality model for the tidal freshwater portions of the Potomac and Anacostia rivers. The model was used to determine the PCB TMDL.
