W.Va. Water Resources Management Trainings
Interstate Commission on the Potomac River Basin
In 2010, the Interstate Commission on the Potomac River Basin presented a series of workshops, sponsored by the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection, covering a broad set of topics related to water resource management. West Virginia’s Water Resources Protection and Management Act requires that a statewide water resources management plan be developed by 2013. These workshops provided background information to help stakeholders participate in the state planning process. While tailored to address common water issues in West Virginia, the presentations provide a foundation for anyone seeking to learn more about water resource management.
Workshop Topics and Presentations:
- Basic concepts in water science
- Water resource planning
- Water demand and availability forecasting
- Water resource issues
- Practical Exercises
- Hydrology
- Issue and Problem Identification
- Collaborative Water Resource Planning
Participants
Three workshops were provided at no cost to participants in Beckley, Morgantown, and Moorefield, West Virginia. Any West Virginian interested in participating in the upcoming state water resources management plan was welcome to attend. Workshop participants included:
- County officials
- County planning and engineering staff
- Officials and staff from municipalities
- Staff from public or private water utilities
- Members of citizen watershed groups
Funding
Funding for these workshops was provided by the American Reinvestment & Recovery Act, the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection, and the Interstate Commission on the Potomac River Basin.
